Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist resort on Lanzarote. Between the old part of this former fishing village and the airport is a 12-kilometre sandy beach, along which stretches the international holiday centre, from the Playa Blanca beach via Playa de los Pocillos to Matagorda. With a wide range of facilities available, there is no lack of entertainment.

LA CALETA DE FAMARA

A small fishing village, 16 km from Mozaga and 8 km north of Teguise. This is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote, the Playa de Famara. In contrast to others, this beach has a rough sea climate. Very strong currents! Swimming can be highly dangerous to life and limb. The coast suitable for surfing and wave riding. It is worth taking a walk through the actual village.

HARÍA

Situated in the valley of a thousand palms, this village has an oriental feel to it. The North African architecture, the cubic white houses and the numerous palm trees give this impression. The palm which has taken to this place most is the golden fruit palm; its fruit is not edible however. Haría often gives the impression of being a ghost town, although almost 3,000 people live there. If one approaches Teguise from Los Valles, there is a wonderful view of the village from the pass road at the Mirador del Haría. In the centre of the village one can enjoy the shadow and peace under the Laurels and acacias.

GUATIZA

In the north of Lanzarote, at and around Guatiza and Mala, you will be amazed to see giant fields of cactus, used for the cultivation of cochineal. The cochineal beetle (coccus cacti), which originates in Mexico, provides the red dye of carmine acid, which was highly prized before the invention of aniline dyes. At the centre of the cactus fields, at the foot of the Guatiza mill, César Manrique designed a cactus garden.

COSTA TEGUISE

Costa Teguise is the third largest tourist centre in Lanzarote after Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. In 1977 the foundation stone for this area was laid with the construction of the worth-seeing five star hotel “Los Salinas” (Avda. Islas Canarias), which César Manrique helped to design. Further hotels, apartments, shops, bars and restaurants were built in quick succession. The well-kept 18-hole golf course is international standard.

Arrecife

The capital and administrative centre of Lanzarote is the home of approx. 30,000 people. Translated, Arrecife means – rocky reef. In the town’s harbour stands the largest fishing fleet of the Canary archipelago. Banks, shops, bars and restaurants can be found on the sea promenade, the Avenida del Generalissimo Franco and in the Calle León y Castillo, which runs from the Castillo de San Gabriel into town.
